Green Living Recycling beyond the basics gives new life old and worn
By Morgan Marsh
Recyclable materials are not limited to paper and plastics. Donated mobile phones aid soldiers overseas and victims of domestic violence. Worn car tires find new lives as bumpers on boat docks, in playgrounds and even in the asphalt surfaces cars drive on every day. Used cars, boats and trucks benefit natural disaster victims and low-income families all over the world. Not only do these products stay out of landfills, but they also help our fellow human beings. With consumers and businesses alike thinking more and more green, the opportunities for giving new life to old products are endless. Here are just a few of the countless ideas.
• Recycled rubber makes surfaces soft, strong and stylish as flooring, playground surfaces, pavers, floor mats and mulch.
• Glass finds new life as counter and wall tiles, home decorations and jewelry. Used glass is perfect for homemade mosaics on plant pots, countertops, wind chimes, sinks, drink coasters and garden stepping stones.
• Used vehicles give aspiring mechanics the invaluable experience they need to suceed when cars are donated to educational charities.
