What is the mission of your business?
We are committed to providing the highest quality legal services to our clients. Jones Cork, LLP has been in continuous existence for more than 140 years and, throughout our history, our responsiveness to clients’ needs has resulted in enduring and valued relationships. We have been successful because we bring the same commitment and attention to each matter, regardless of size or complexity.
Your advice for women wanting to start their own business in Macon?
We admire female entrepreneurs for their strength, determination and dedication. For women wanting to start their own business in Macon, seek out a local business professional to help guide you in the many nuances of starting a new business. For women who want to start a law practice in Macon, the State Bar of Georgia offers assistance with law practice management and many other supports for those starting out in the legal profession. A local attorney-mentor is very important.
What are you most excited about right now in our community?
Our firm is located in the heart of downtown at the corner of Second and Cherry streets. We are witnessing such an exciting growth in Macon, from new businesses and restaurants to film production. We believe recent improvements, such as new sidewalks, landscaping and lighting, will sustain existing business and support continued growth.
You might be surprised that:
Jones Cork, LLP was one of the first law firms to hire a female attorney in Macon. Cater, who has been a partner since 1994, practices in the areas of creditors’ rights, probate, public finance, business litigation, commercial transactions and estate planning. Callie has been a partner since 2008 and represents individuals, businesses, employers, self-insured employers and insurers in a variety of claims and issues involving employment matters, workers’ compensation and personal injury. Renee has been a partner since 2016, and primarily practices in the area of education law representing Middle Georgia school districts, while also assisting other clients in the areas of insurance defense, employment and appellate advocacy. Canon is Of Counsel and focuses her practices on education law and a variety of employment law issues. Sydney is an associate with the firm, and her areas of practice include workers’ compensation, personal injury defense and general litigation.
What is the most gratifying part of your job?
The appreciation that comes with repeat business that allows us to build strong relationships with our clients. It is gratifying to know that you have earned the trust and respect of a client such that they seek your counsel when the next issue arises.
What has been the most challenging part of being a woman in business?
It likely comes as no surprise that it is not easy to balance our professional and personal lives, but fortunately our firm encourages, supports and believes in strong families and life outside of work.
What was the best business advice you ever received?
What did you learn from your mistakes? Mistakes can certainly be humbling, and you should use those as opportunities for growth and reflection.
How could women better support each other?
By remembering that support comes in all forms – big and small. Whether it is recommending a woman for a position on a community board, or simply sending an email complimenting a woman colleague on their work or contribution to the community, we are all in this together.
